Where do you find your truth?

I’ll never forget this conversation I had with a close friend a few years back. I was telling him not to do something because I had heard it wasn’t good. He then asked me, “Who told you that?” After thinking for a second I said, “I think my parents, I’m not sure.” We then laughed because I was telling him not to do something and I didn’t even know if it was true or not. It is SO easy to create your own truth based off of something you think you heard or something you saw on social media. You start to tell yourself things that are not fact, but they become fact to you. I brought this up to a couple friends of mine, and they expressed they do the same thing. So if you’re like us, you’re not alone.

We have to be careful to not look to the world for our truth. There are quite a few touchy subjects going on in our world right now. Instead of arguing with each other and throwing our opinion on others, have we spent time in the Word of God? Have we asked how the Lord wants to use us to display His truth? God does not want us to argue and pick sides, He wants us to spend time understanding what He teaches us, and living in a way that makes it evident we live for Him! There have been many instances in my life where I have gotten heated over a particular topic. We all have our things we’re passionate about. One of those things for me is bringing awareness to persons with disabilities. My brother, Micah, has autism and is why I am so passionate about this. When there have been people who say mean things or just simply don’t understand him or others with disabilities, I always bring up scripture. Christ was accepting of all people, and in fact He saw potential in them when no one else did. I say all of this because I could easily argue back when people are mean and simply uneducated on the topic. Instead, I have found truth in what the Bible says about persons with disabilities, and I use scripture to help them understand why we are to love them just as we love anyone else. I challenge you today to figure out where you are finding your truths in life. Is it your friends? Social media? Something you were told growing up? I challenge you to go to the Word of God and figure out what you believe!

Prayer: God, I pray that you would bring light to the areas in my life where I have found my truth in someone or something other than you. Help me to kind and gracious to those around me who think different than me. Bring people into my life that challenge me spiritually and draw me closer to you! Amen.
